The uncertain future prospects have slowed down the development of Industry 4.0

Uncertainty in investment returns hinders the advancement of digitization

Low degree of automation: only half of all processes are automated

Cost Reduction vs. Digitization: Challenges Faced by DACH Region

The United States leads in sustainability, while the DeOrui region and China need to catch up

The degree of automation and digitization in the production process is an indicator of the actual competitiveness of a company or production location. The “2023 Industry 4.0 Barometer” study conducted by management and IT consulting firm MHP shows that only 50% of production processes have been automated. More than half of companies have not utilized the potential and opportunities brought by Industry 4.0, or have not seen it as a favorable means. For two-thirds of the surveyed companies, the uncertainty of return on investment (ROI) is the decisive reason for their lack of digital commitment. This is particularly true for the digitization of the workshop. One of the biggest obstacles to achieving overall workshop networking is the unclear profitability of Industry 4.0 technology. Respondents believe that the two technologies that have the greatest impact on this field are autonomous transportation (43%) and artificial intelligence (39%).

Digitalization gap: China and the DeOrui region need to catch up with the United States

As is well known, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have performed poorly in digital production. In this year’s Industry 4.0 barometer, the three countries mentioned above are still far behind China, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and the gap is widening. The biggest obstacle to implementing Industry 4.0 technology is the lack of qualified employees and necessary training programs. Existing employees are busy with daily business, so relying on them is not a viable option. More than half of the surveyed companies are dissatisfied with the training opportunities provided.

Sustainability: The United States and the United Kingdom are leading in circular economy

In terms of sustainability, a major issue is the high expenditure required for improvement. This leads to only surface issues being addressed. In the United States and the United Kingdom, circular economy is being prioritized, while the De Orui region and China still need to catch up. Almost half of the surveyed companies stated that they will continue to operate certain projects or processes even if they do not meet their sustainable development goals.
